Daisy's diary: mixed signals

That Big Boof Scratchy called me vain this morning. That is so hurtful!

All I was doing was looking in the mirror to see if my whiskers were straight. I have this fear of bending a whisker while I sleep, so that when I wake it stands out at a right angle.

It happened to my mum once, and she had an awful time negotiating her way through tight spaces for a while. Her whisker signals kept telling her to turn in circles when she needed to turn left.

Luckily, it straightened out after a couple of days.

I wish the Big Boof would straighten himself out.

A little ray of sunshine

I have discovered that, when it's cold, it's warmer at the bedroom end of the house than it is at the sofa room end.

The thing is, I don't think it's the beds that make the bedroom warmer. I think it's something to do with the light that comes through the window at that end of the house.

Odd, I know, but if you look at the pictures you can see what I mean - light streaming in and landing on the carpet. And if you lie down on the carpet where the light hits, it's really warm.

I know, I'm a genius.

The back door to the house is closed and I need to go to the little girl's lawn. Big Boss is working in the study so I have to get him to open the door for me.

In the study, he's tapping away at the keyboard when I give him a prod to the knee with my nose. His right hand reaches down and gives my left ear a scratch, and then returns to the keyboard. He hasn't understood.

I give him another nose-nudge, and am rewarded with another quick ear scratch. Big Boss sure knows how to focus on his work.

I give him a third, more insistent nudge. Big Boss stops typing, looks at me, then bends down and gives me a huge hug. "Lovely girl," he says, and returns to typing.

I once heard someone say that it helps to cross your legs when you need to pee, but I tried and it doesn't work for dogs. I need to think of something else.

I trot back to the living room and over to the sofa where Scratchy is dreaming about food. "Hey, doofus," I say. He lifts his head and looks at me moronically. I can see him considering his response. He finally settles for, "Huh?"

"We have a back-door problem," I say. "Come with me and do the two-nose thing."

This is an old trick, well-known to dogs. It only works if you can find some bare human skin, but luckily Big Boss is wearing shorts. "One, two, three," I say to Scratchy, and together we push our noses into his thigh.

Big Boss jumps, looks at us, gets the message and heads off to open the door.

It just proves the old adage, two noses are wetter than one.

Little Boss wasn't feeling too well and stayed home from work in an effort to get better. Daisy and I were surprised to find out that the process of getting better when a human feels unwell is to pretend you're a greyhound. That's right, Little Boss climbed onto the sofa and stayed there all day!

A greyhound needs his sleep, of course, but there was plenty of room for two, and I was happy to help keep Little Boss warm.

It was a bit noisy, though. That machine goes tap, tap, tap all the time. I don't know what it does — its primary purpose seems to be to prevent humans going to sleep. What that achieves I wouldn't know.

Of course, a boy can sleep only so long before he has to go outside and pee and check for cats and have a good long sniff of the wind. I did that and you'll never guess what that cur-sed Daisy did while I was out. She pinched my place!

Just settled right in to the warm spot.

Doesn't look like she intends to move any time soon.

But I'm not going to give up my spot next to Little Boss that easily. I'm going to outwait her. I'm tough, yes I am. I am just going to sit here until ... zzzzz.

Dog definitions

Greyhound greeting protocol

My human's a nice enough fella but his language skills are a bit of a laugh. For one thing, he gets the meaning of things all muddled up. For example, you should see what he calls a run!

So, just to help out, and for the sake of a bit of efficient communication around here, I thought I'd make the following list of terms and phrases that the two-legged guy regularly gets wrong.

In each case, I've given the Man's definition, followed by the Greyhound's definition. Just to ensure you're following me, the definitions preceded by G are the correct ones.

M: Man, master of the universe
G: Man, provider of dinner

M: Greyhound, world's gentlest pet
G: Greyhound, master of the universe

M: Slow walk
G: I'm cold

M: Walk
G: Are we moving yet?

M: Power walk
G: Perceptible movement

M: Jog
G: This is almost worth getting off the sofa for

M: Run
G: Fun

M: Sprint
G: Fool! Let me off this damn lead and I'll show you what sprint means

M: Thinking pace — blog content idea generation
G: Thinking pace — how long until dinner?

M: Exercise regime
G: Born to run

M: New running shoes
D: New chew toy

M: Scenery
D: Sniffery

M: Other dogs — smile
D: Other dogs — Whine, yap, touch nose, sniff front, sniff rear, sniff under, wag

M: Other humans — smile
D: Other humans — Not there, you two-pawed oaf. Just behind the ears ... ahhh, that's it
