Scratchy's diary: My February 14 treat

The Big Boss was particularly affectionate to the Little Boss this morning, as if February 14 is some special day. He called her "Valentine". That's a new one — how many names can one person have?

Anyway, he finally stopped with the affection and asked Little Boss if she would like some breakfast in bed.

"I would," she said.

"I would too," I said, but I don't think he heard me.

However, as the old saying goes, it's the persistent dog which catches the leatherwood honey on soy and linseed light rye (although I'd accept margarine on cheap white), and so I followed Big Boss to the food room.

"Can I have a piece of toast?" I asked, with just that right mix of politeness and respect which I have found, from long experience, lets hoomans think they are pack leaders.

"You've already had breakfast," he said.

Drats. I was hoping he'd forgotten.

"Oh, I know that," I said, with a self-deprecating smile, "but just this once, couldn't you show how much you love me with a little extra something?"

And, amazingly, he gave me an extra bit of toast.

Maybe there is something special about February 14.

A little ray of sunshine

I have discovered that, when it's cold, it's warmer at the bedroom end of the house than it is at the sofa room end.

The thing is, I don't think it's the beds that make the bedroom warmer. I think it's something to do with the light that comes through the window at that end of the house.

Odd, I know, but if you look at the pictures you can see what I mean - light streaming in and landing on the carpet. And if you lie down on the carpet where the light hits, it's really warm.

I know, I'm a genius.

What should Michelle Obama call her dog?

A Portuguese water dog

America's First Lady has made a decision which is receiving as much press, and perhaps more praise, than anything her presidential husband has managed recently.

Michelle Obama has decided that the new family dog, America's First Pooch, will be a Portuguese water dog.

It is a decision which has been met with a lot of questioning looks. Google searches on 'Portuguese water dog' have probably risen from one a month to 10 million a day.

Assuming this is not a shaggy story, and Mrs Obama is serious about her decision, the desire to learn something about the breed is understandable.

If there is one word to summarise the Portuguese water dog breed, it is: shaggy.

Other breed characteristics can be summed up in Michelle Obama's own words. "Temperamentally they're supposed to be pretty good," she said in an interview with People magazine. "From the size perspective, they're sort of middle of the road ... and the folks that we know who own them have raved about them."

The family is planning to acquire the dog soon, after returning from a spring break. One major decision remains - what to name it.

Leave your suggestions in a comment box below and I will personally see to it that your ideas are forwarded to the White House. Please note that it is believed that Mrs Obama has already ruled out the name Dubbya.

Five-star dog house

dog kennel luxury

In a display of dog appreciation which some people may call barking mad, a British surgeon is building a kennel for her two great danes for £250,000. That is US$368,000, or A$568,000, or enough money to rescue every stray dog in Europe.

Talk about the yap of luxury. These dogs are not paw.

The dog duplex is on an estate near Cirencester in Gloucestershire. Features include sheepskin-lined, temperature-controlled beds, a spa, automatic dispensers of chilled and filtered water, air-conditioning, a sound system, a 132cm plasma TV and a retina scanner installed at the front door to stop any other dogs getting in.

We think the retina scanner may be excessive.

The dogs will have a bedroom each, both with large windows which overlook their private playground.

The kennel has been designed by architect Andy Ramus, and will be built of zinc, glass and limestone.

We just hope the retina scanner is reliable. Wouldn't want the neighbourhood dogs dropping in unannounced. That could be a real party pooper.
