The spirit of Christmas

December 23rd 2010 07:28
animal welfare

The news from Melbourne, Australia, is that someone broke into an animal welfare centre overnight and stole whatever they could carry away.

I heard the news on the radio, including an interview with a man who works at the shelter. It would be bad enough at any time, he said, but it’s devastating two days before Christmas because this is not the season of goodwill to animals.

It’s their busiest period, with the centre full of dogs and cats abandoned by people who apparently discover at this time of year that there is no room for animals in their disorganised lives.

I know, I swore too. I felt angry for several hours. I couldn’t help it. The Christmas spirit was forgotten.

And then I got an email. It came from my wife via a friend of hers, but I think there may have been a little help from points spiritual. You can’t be angry and unhappy at Christmas, not when people are creating joyful messages like this.

I wish you all a joyful festive season, and may 2011 be full of health, happiness and new homes for abandoned animals.

Did they steal goods or the animals? I presume it was the former.

Hi Queenie, yes, just stole stuff. Anything they could carry and later sell, I assume. I'd like to sell the thieves - the three-headed salt miners from the Andromedan system pay good money for slave labour ...
