Magic needs help

greyhound magic

They don't ask questions at AZgreyhounds in Arizona. With thousands of young and healthy purebred greyhounds around the world in need of adoption each year after their time on the track is through, the dogs need organised help.

Sometimes, they need a lot of help.

When AZgreyhounds was notified in October last year by one of the racing kennels in Tucson that a four-year old female had sustained a broken hock and was being retired, they didn't ask questions.

Her racing name was USS Imagine, but that's not what her friends called her. They called her Magic.

Upon arrival at AZgreyhounds, further examination showed that Magic had dislocated all of the bones in her lower left rear leg and sustained a severe fracture to one bone. Orthopaedic surgery was completed on November 7. Recuperation and recovery will take four to six months.

AZgreyhounds, Inc. is, like greyhound adoption programs everywhere, dedicated to the rescue and adoption of these graceful, gentle animals. AZgreyhounds provides educational programs to schools and groups on greyhound history, greyhound racing, and the rescue and adoption program. When it receives dogs, it neuters them, cleans their teeth, vaccinates for rabies, distemper, parvo and influenza, tests for heartworm, lyme disease and ehrlichia, and gives a complete physical and microchip. New owners are provided with a collar, lead and identification tag.

They do all this as a registered charity.

Unexpected extra costs, therefore, can hurt. The veterinary cost for Magic's operation was US$2,600, with an additional $500 needed for x-rays, cast and bandage changes etc.

So it is time to ask a question, and the question is this: can you help?

If so, AZgreyhounds president Dave Breen would be delighted to hear from you. AZgreyhounds is a 501 (c) (3), Non-Profit Organization (EIN 20-1181905). Donations can be sent to AZgreyhounds, Inc., 3288 Sky Hawk Drive, Sierra Vista, Arizona, USA 85650-6623. Or you can contact Dave by email through the web site at www.azgreyhounds.com.

Send a get well soon greeting to Magic while you're about it.

Slum dogs, rabies and Pamela

Pamela Anderson and her pet dog

Authorities in central Mumbai, India, locked into a bitter battle against deadly rabies and the estimated 70,000 stray dogs that help spread it, didn't ask for Pamela Anderson's opinion on the problem.

But they got it this week when Anderson made headlines with her catchy appraisal of the situation: "Dogs don't wear condoms".

It's a dream line in terms of highlighting the problem and appealing to the authorities to come down on the side of humanity in their decision-making.

Those authorities are considering a program of mass eradication of the dogs, sparking an outcry from many quarters, including Celebrityville, who advocate a program of sterilisation instead.

The problem is huge. There are so many stray dogs because they thrive in the city's slums, where they are kept as pets of sorts by the slum dwellers and where freely accessible piles of garbage provide food.

The problem has been around since British colonial times, when mass killing of the animals was introduced. It was stopped in the early 1990s when it was decided that the eradication program was not achieving, well, eradication. In fact it was deemed "ineffective" in controlling the dog population and reducing human rabies deaths.

Meanwhile, sterilisation programs were introduced, mainly through the charity Welfare of Stray Dogs, which has been carrying out mass sterilisation since 1989.

Pamela Anderson's letter to the Mumbai authorities cites support for mass sterilisation from the World Health Organization, the Animal Health Board of India, and the activist group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

It was PETA which publicised Anderson's letter. Its chief executive, Abodh Aras, said, "It’s not only Pamela Anderson but a lot of children have also been writing to the commission saying that one should have the policy of sterilisation rather than killing stray dogs.

“Killing has proved to be ineffective in terms of bringing down the stray dog population and human rabies death. It’s not just from the dog point of view but also from the human point of view.”

The sterilisation isn't working either, which is why the authorities are now seeking legal permission to return to the mass killing program stopped almost 20 years ago.

Perhaps if they put the same energy, and government resources, into sterilisation efforts, instead of leaving it to charity groups and concerned citizens, we would actually see some progress.

Doggy soup kitchen

dog hungry lick lips

They know how to appreciate dogs in Berlin - at both ends of the social spectrum.

A few weeks ago we read about the opening of a dogs-only bus service in Berlin which ferries some seriously pampered pooches to and from a luxury dog day-care centre.

Now we are reading about a dogs-only soup kitchen, started by Berlin resident Claudia Hollm. Ms Hollm offers a free meal to pets of the homeless and unemployed, claiming that we underestimate the importance of the relationships between people and their pets. When times are tough, the welfare of those pets is just one more thing for people to worry about.

"Making sure dogs don't go hungry is just as important as making sure that people don't starve," Ms Hollm said.

Her company, Animal Board, survives on corporate sponsorship, including pet food makers.

Three barks and a tail wag for Claudia Hollm.
