Scratchy's diary: raw and sore

January 4th 2010 05:28

I woke up in a funny place recently. No familiar faces, no Short Black and no Bosses. Just some cats in cages and the smell of disinfectant. There were some people I didn't know, some dressed in green and some dressed in white, but they were no more generous than Big Boss when it came to supplying food.

The thing is, I woke up sore. All my muscles were stiff, like I'd been running 40 kilometres instead of 400 metres. And I had raw, sore patches on my front legs, like I'd been banging them on something.

The green and white people talked about epilepsy whenever they were near me. I'm not sure what that is. Maybe it's like being hit by a car. The people put lots of ointments and bandages on my legs, which was stupid because it made them hard to lick better. But the bandages are gone now and the legs are healing quickly.

They are a lot better than they they look in these pictures taken yesterday. I'm not sure why Big Boss got the camera out. He said something about being in a funny position around the cushion. I don't see what's so funny about it. I was just giving it a fluff before having a nap.

Anyway, I want to wish you all a speedy and waggy new year. Oh, and watch your knees. Or you might end up in a strange place surrounded by cats and strangers.

Scratchy's diary: dog tired

I'm exhausted! The Little Boss must have slept really, really well last night because instead of going for the usual walk to the park and back this morning, she took us on a guided tour of the suburb.

Just have a look at me now ...

Honestly, it's not hot. It's just that greyhounds aren't built for four-hour-walks. Oh, all right, it wasn't that long. But my paws are sore and my back's aching and I couldn't straighten my ears if you said "gourmet dinner".

I wish Little Boss wouldn't wake in this mood. What's that word, ecowlient. No, wait, ebullient. That's it.

It's not often I agree with the Big Doofus but this time I must, what's that word, condog. No, wait, concur. That's it.

I like visitors.

I especially like the little ones. The big ones tend to sit around the table all night and get slowly louder. Why do they always do that?

The younger ones give me lots of pats. And when they aren't patting me, they watch the television, which means I can rest my head in their lap.

One thing I've noticed, though, is that almost all the women big people like to bring a cushion for me. They always seem to put it in the corner of the sofa nearest the table.

As cushions go, most of them are pretty lumpy, but they can come in handy when there's no lap available.

Daisy's diary: mixed signals

That Big Boof Scratchy called me vain this morning. That is so hurtful!

All I was doing was looking in the mirror to see if my whiskers were straight. I have this fear of bending a whisker while I sleep, so that when I wake it stands out at a right angle.

It happened to my mum once, and she had an awful time negotiating her way through tight spaces for a while. Her whisker signals kept telling her to turn in circles when she needed to turn left.

Luckily, it straightened out after a couple of days.

I wish the Big Boof would straighten himself out.

A little ray of sunshine

I have discovered that, when it's cold, it's warmer at the bedroom end of the house than it is at the sofa room end.

The thing is, I don't think it's the beds that make the bedroom warmer. I think it's something to do with the light that comes through the window at that end of the house.

Odd, I know, but if you look at the pictures you can see what I mean - light streaming in and landing on the carpet. And if you lie down on the carpet where the light hits, it's really warm.

I know, I'm a genius.

The back door to the house is closed and I need to go to the little girl's lawn. Big Boss is working in the study so I have to get him to open the door for me.

Little Boss wasn't feeling too well and stayed home from work in an effort to get better. Daisy and I were surprised to find out that the process of getting better when a human feels unwell is to pretend you're a greyhound. That's right, Little Boss climbed onto the sofa and stayed there all day!

My human's a nice enough fella but his language skills are a bit of a laugh. For one thing, he gets the meaning of things all muddled up. For example, you should see what he calls a run!

The Little Boss disappeared for a while. Five times when Big Boss opened the bedroom door in the morning and I ran in with Big Brindle, there was no Little Boss in the bed. It was awful — we just stopped and stared at the empty bed looking puzzled.
