Two dogs, one food bowl
February 18th 2009 20:00
It makes sense to have two dogs and one dog bowl.
When Scratchy eats, he tries to emulate the split-second creation of the universe. Scratchy eats at the speed of the Big Gulp. Think F18 Hornet late for a date with a hot Mirage.
When Daisy eats, she chews.
Every.
Individual.
Bit.
Further, she likes to savour flavour, head up and eyes back like a master wine taster choosing between the last two candidates for the gold medal. She also likes to throw in a jig, a sashay and a garden inspection or two, returning to the bowl each time with poetic calmness.
Chewing is a concept which Scratchy sneers at. The only time he chews is in a recurring daydream where he is given a fresh thigh bone from a tyrannosaurus rex. For that three, possibly four, chews may be required.
We do not, therefore, feed the dogs at the same time. Daisy would still be composing a sonnet of gratitude to her higher power while Scratchy, having finished his meal, finishes hers.
So we feed Scratchy first and Daisy second.
Which means it makes sense to have two dogs and one dog bowl.
