Meet Pudding and Porterhouse

August 31st 2008 05:55
pug dog

There were some interesting new faces at the dog park this morning.

Scruffy is an active Maltese cross who zipped here and there, keeping up with much bigger dogs. "What's she crossed with?" I asked her owner. "We don't know," she replied, "but it was something energetic."

Labradoodles seem to come in all sizes, and occasionally you get one which looks like a shaggy Newfoundland. One arrived at the park shortly after us, and it was the most huggable dog I have seen for a long time. So hug it I did, which was a mistake because all the rain which had fallen in the past hour was, I think, collected in the depths of its vast and curly coat.

Dobbie is a boxer. He is young but already walks the streets off-lead. I saw Dobbie and his owner approaching the park from the other side of the street. Suddenly Dobbie, seeing the other dogs, forgot his training and darted across the road. His owner bellowed, but Dobbie was already nose-to-nose with Scruffy through the fence. Naughty Dobbie. Some off-lead work to do yet, it seems.

Next to arrive were Pudding and Porterhouse, two bandy-legged, brindle barrels of snorting, rollicking fun who both look like a cross between a pug and a tug boat. They were immediately awarded the Best Name of the Week Award, which they will have to share because both names are great.

Porterhouse is the senior and long-time lone canine resident of his household, and was apparently unhappy when his single-dog status was interrupted recently with the arrival of Pudding. She is much smaller, and was rescued just a few weeks ago from a miserable life, most of it spent in a cage. Despite this she has personality to burn, and such a sweet nature that, to the surprise of his owners, Porterhouse was first won over and then smitten by his new mate.

Then it started to rain again - leads on and we squeezed our two large greyhounds into our small European car. They looked tired but happy. Another fun morning at the dog park.

My siblings and I joke that perhaps we can name the future pets, 'come here' and 'go away'. Ok, silly joke
