Great dog quotes

puppy love

We recently offered a list of literary references to dogs and followed it with some of the funnier quotes about our canine friends.

To complete the set, we offer here the best quotes we could find saying what most of us feel: that the world would be a much sadder place without dogs.

You think dogs will not be in heaven? I tell you, they will be there long before any of us.
Robert Louis Stevenson

If there are no dogs in heaven then I want to go where they go.
Will Rogers

If I have any beliefs about immortality, it is that certain dogs I have known will go to heaven, and very, very few persons.
James Thurber

There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face.
Ben Williams

Dogs are miracles with paws.
Susan Ariel Rainbow Kennedy (attrib.)

Dogs' lives are too short. Their only fault, really.
Agnes Sligh Turnbull

I think we are drawn to dogs because they are the uninhibited creatures we might be if we weren't certain we knew better. They fight for honor at the first challenge, make love with no moral restraint, and they do not for all their marvelous instincts appear to know about death. Being such wonderfully uncomplicated beings, they need us to do their worrying.
George Bird Evans, Troubles with Bird Dogs

I talk to him when I'm lonesome like; and I'm sure he understands.
When he looks at me so attentively, and gently licks my hands;
then he rubs his nose on my tailored clothes,
but I never say naught thereat.
For the good Lord knows I can buy more clothes,
but never a friend like that.
W. Dayton Wedgefarth

Dogs laugh, but they laugh with their tails.
Max Eastman, Enjoyment of Laughter

If dogs could talk, it would take a lot of the fun out of owning one.
Andy Rooney

If dogs could talk, perhaps we would find it as hard to get along with them as we do with people.
Karel Capek

If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man.
Mark Twain

You cannot teach an old dog new tricks.
W Camden, 1614

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.
Robert A. Heinlein

A man may smile and bid you hail
Yet wish you to the devil;
But when a good dog wags his tail,
You know he's on the level.
Anonymous

Any member introducing a dog into the Society's premises shall be liable to a fine of one pound. Any animal leading a blind person shall be deemed to be a cat.
Oxford Union Society, London, Rule 46

Happiness is a warm puppy.
Charles M. Schulz

A dog can express more with his tail in seconds than his owner can express with his tongue in hours.
Anonymous

A dog has the soul of a philosopher.
Plato

I miss the wagging little tail;
I miss the plaintive, pleading wail;
I miss the wistful, loving glance;
I miss the circling welcome-dance."
Henry Willett, In Memoriam

Every boy should have two things: a dog, and a mother willing to let him have one.
Anonymous

Now, I am a mixer. I can't help it. It's my nature. I like men. I like the taste of their shoes, the smell of their legs, the sound of their voices. It may be weak of me, but a man has only to speak to me, and a sort of thrill goes down my spine and sets my tail wagging.
P.G. Wodehouse

The small percentage of dogs that bite people is monumental proof that the dog in the most benign, forgiving creature on earth.
W.R. Koehler

Living with a dog is easy - like living with an idealist.
H.L. Mencken

When you point out something to a dog, he looks at your finger.
J Bryan III

My little dog - a heartbeat at my feet.
Edith Wharton

R.L. Stevenson and Will Rogers say it for me.

And think, if dogs get to heaven first, their testimony just might be what gets us passed in or not.

Chris,
"That gives me paws for thought ..." lol

Excellent choices. Thank you for sharing these, I'd not heard of many of them.

"You cannot teach an old dog new tricks."
Is that saying really, nearly four hundred years old? Wow!

Hi Elizabeth
Is that saying really, nearly four hundred years old? Wow!
