Scratchy's diary: dog tired

October 22nd 2009 00:25
dog pet greyhound

I'm exhausted! The Little Boss must have slept really, really well last night because instead of going for the usual walk to the park and back this morning, she took us on a guided tour of the suburb.

Just have a look at me now ...

dog pet greyhound

Honestly, it's not hot. It's just that greyhounds aren't built for four-hour-walks. Oh, all right, it wasn't that long. But my paws are sore and my back's aching and I couldn't straighten my ears if you said "gourmet dinner".

I wish Little Boss wouldn't wake in this mood. What's that word, ecowlient. No, wait, ebullient. That's it.

It's not often I agree with the Big Doofus but this time I must, what's that word, condog. No, wait, concur. That's it.

Poor Babies, my massager, I think that's what he's called, is going to be shipped immediately, or sooner, if mom will help.

Geeze Scratchy,

I reckons I could'a done ut an back agin on me brand new foot. I tells yer what, this vet uv mine, his bloods worth bottlin! Dyer get yer big words from one uv them word books? I recons yer a cut above ther avridge usin' big ones like thut.

Clyde.

Dear Daisy,

Don't listen to the big fool, in the first place he's not allowed to go for walks yet and in the second place he'd be just as exhausted as I would. You tell little boss from me it's not in her adoption contract to over work your beautiful paws.

Big licks,

Heidi.

Hi Roux,

I'm excited about the massager thing. Big Boss won't scratch my back for more than two hours at a time. No stamina.

Hi Clyde,

I get the big words from listening to the Big Boss, who uses them like a wanker at a lexicology conference. Does your vet do massages?

Heidi darling,

I can't tell you how soothing it is to have someone who understands.

Dear Scratchy,

Now you've done it! Poor Clyde is staring at the screen crosseyed, he's got as far as wanker ( he'd say an arty farty bludger I imagine) and stuck fast. You must understand our Clyde has the language skills of your average Mallee Bull, thick as a brick and thick headed besides.

Clyde's vet does not do massages but he's been to one who made his bones and joints do funny things to see if it helped. It didn't. The trick with back scratches is to sneak up on the Boss when he's thinking really hard and sort of position yourself just under his hand, he will then scratch for hours without being aware he is doing so. I'm sure Daisy is a past mistress at this accomplishment, watch her in action and copy her if you can.

You should be glad you only went for a walk with Little Boss. This morning we headed up to Obedience nice and early but of course all the learners have to go first and our advanced class is not till about midday. It is about 34o in the shade and they expect us to do our routine. The Missus tipped 1/2 a bucket of water over Clyde and me but we were still hot. Most of the other dogs were hot too. It occurred to me we needed to demonstrate our objections so when it came time to do our off lead recall (Clyde and I do it together sometimes just to show off) we waited to be called then dived for the shade. Bother the Missus standing out in the sun, we went for the best option. Can't understand why all the Humans laughed at us, seemed eminently sensible to me!

I'd better sign off before poor Clyde fries his brain trying to work out what you said.

Heidi.

Heidi,

Wow, were you the smart one or what? Good thing Clyde has you to help him make the right moves, although he might have figured that one out all by himself.

I'm sorry he keeps frying his brain trying to figure out big words and what they are and how to use them. But Little Squirt, as mom calls Max, seems to have a similar problem, but that might be because there isn't all that much room in his head to hold big words and long thoughts.

Scratchy, what Heidi says about scratches is so right, I do that all the time to mom especially if she's watching TV (Telly to you Aussies, I think). Problem is Little Max now just jumps up on her lap while I'm getting scratches and ruins the whole thing. I'm going to have to teach him that's not acceptable regardless of what mom might think.

Dear Daisy and Roux,

What am I going to do? I am so cross with Clyde I could bite him. The silly idiot! Honestly this being stoic in the face of pain has gone too far! The Missus took him down to the vet yesterday to have his bandage off, he's carrying on like a puppy, limping a bit but really cheerful, says he's going to be as fit as a fiddle and happy as a bush full of budgies. The Missus was pretty confident too, the foot smelt a bit off but she thought it was just because he'd been doing more than he should on it and got it smelly with sweat and dirt. It didn't smell really bad. The vet thought the same but when the bandage came off the foot was horrible. The Missus says it had burst open and was all infected. The vet was really upset. If Clyde had told the Missus it hurt she'd have got him to the vet earlier although the Missus says it might not have made any difference. She and the vet have decided to take off all of the bad toe now as it will heal a lot quicker than trying to sort out the infected wound. But what if that gets infected too? Are they going to take off his foot? I'm having nightmares about it, I couldn't even eat my dinner last night, not even the sardines the Missus gave me as a treat!

What am I going to do with him?

Your worried friend,

Heidi.

Oh, my dear Heidi,

I can't tell you how distressed I am by that news. Infections are so awful and scary. But with all the new medicine that our vets now have it is much easier to cure them. (mom says cure is the wrong word, but I don't care#.

Your Mum and your vet will take really good care of your silly boy. Clyde will probably be more quiet with those pills, mom calls them something like antibotics or something. But it don't care what she calls them, they help. I've had lots and lots of them and they always help me, they helped Zues too.

So, don't fret, nows not the time, you just take care of Clyde and be sure he doesn't over do but takes it easy. You can be informer for your mum and tell her if he gets out of line. Bump his foot sometimes and see if he over reacts and if he does make your mum take off the bandages and check the foot.

Losing a toe isn't all that horible, Clyde will adjust easily. We aren't even going to talk about the possibility of losing his foot, it's not time. I know that he will be find. I believe that.

Mom said that we were going to send lots of bright white light, purple light and gold light all to help Clyde heal fast, gain the wisdom he needs to behave himself and the strength to take care of himself. (Yeah, right he's a boy.)

I'll be thinking of you both,

Love your friend, Roux

P.S. Mom sends her best to your Mum.

Dear Heidi,

I just wanted to tell you that Roux insisted on typing that last post all without my help. Usually I help but she was so concerned she insisted on doing it herself.

As Roux stated we are sending bright white, purple and gold light for Clyde, your Mum and of course, you. We both hope it helps.

Oh, why don't you see if your mum will let you lick Clyde's foot to help heal it. Roux wanted me to tell you that, she forgot.

My best thought,

Roux's mom, Janice

Dear Roux,

Thank you and to your Mom too for all your kind comments but tell me, do you ever feel just a tiny bit foolish?

I really did panic didn't I?

Clyde is home with his foot in a great big blue bandage and his vet has promised me it is going to be all right. He has to keep the bandage on for 10 days then we take the bandage off and let the foot finish healing before he (the vet) takes the stitches out.

Clyde is his usual cheerful self, he says everything is great. He's already walking on it (you should have seen him last night though trying to cock his leg holding the sore fore paw in the air, silly old fool, he gave up in the end and crouched like a sensible lady dog). The Missus is doing her best to keep him from doing too much, at least he's not trying to gallop around on it. He gets his antibiotics in a piece of sausage, it almost makes me wish I had a sore paw. I love sausage!

love from a rather embarrassed,

Heidi.

Oh, my dear Heidi,

That is wonderful news, I'm so glad and relieved for you and Clyde. Now tell the big goof to behave himself and give him a quick hug for me.

Please don't be embarrassed, I would have reacted the same way, as a matter of fact I did when Zeus was sick, every single time.

I look forward to hearing from you, much more frequently.

Roux

Dear Heidi, Roux, Clyde, their mums and moms and, last but by no means least, gh zoom addict,

Please excuse my blogging abstinence and general absence. Life has had a twist lately, and I find myself in the massively disadvantaged position of being back in full-time work.

Oh dear.

But catching up here on Clyde's recovery, Roux's thoughts on massage, Heidi's Heidisms and, call-me-vain-but-most-of-all, the last message from my only ever professed personal addict, I hereby declare my intention to return to normal service.

Stay tuned!

Hugs and licks to all.

Dear Chris,

Your only addict? you must be joking! Heidi and Clyde have been so worried about you and Daisy and Scratchy (my own personal nightmare was that Scratchy had had a fatal epileptic fit). I ended up looking up all your other blogs (my son would love blogercises, I'm going to put him onto it) and we didn't know whether to be relieved or more worried to find they were as neglected. I told the hounds that you were probably on holiday but we were hugely relieved to see 2 new comments and a rational explanation for the silence. (Clyde says wot's rats nail abaht workin' alla time?) Do you realise yours is the only blog we read? Apart from that of said son who lives in France, and we'd read Roux's one if we could open it.

That makes 4 addicts, and I'm sure Roux would classify too, and maybe her new companion is interested too by now. It's a regular fan club you've got out here!

The Missus.
