Research proves greyhounds are lovably useless guard dogs
September 30th 2010 08:18
Hello, Heidi here. That's my human writing below. When she talks about greyhounds, you should listen - of course, I taught her everything she knows.
By Jennie Alcorn
A research project conducted in 2008 investigated 33 popular breeds of dog looking into their general health and their level of aggression towards other dogs and towards people (health issues and aggression are the main reasons people give for unsuccessful dog- shelter adoptions).
Greyhounds had the best health record of all the breeds as they have a greater genetic pool than other pure breeds and they are bred for athleticism, not to breed standard.
They were also the least aggressive of all the breeds featuring in only 1.6% of both dog to dog (compared to Akitas 29.3%) and dog to human incidents (compared to Daschunds 20.6%).
It amuses me when I tell people this at promotional events and they then ask me if they are good watch dogs.

Zoomies guest writer Jennie Alcorn lives north of Adelaide, South Australia, and has a lot of experience and inside knowledge of both the greyhound racing and greyhound adoption communities. She has one husband (a country GP), four children, two greyhounds and a never-ending stream of foster hounds.

Have you noticed what an odd sense of humour humans have? When the Missus said she was sending Chris a photo of me I specifically requested she make sure it was an elegant one, and look what she sends!!! Honestly I didn't even know she'd taken that one, I was fast asleep. I'd have deleted it if I'd known. Now Clyde is laughing his head off at me. I'm never going to trust the Missus with a camera again!!!
Your disgusted friend,
Heidi.

Your manners are deplorable. Of course I shouldn't expect anything better from a boy dog, particularly one who enjoys Clyde's company but I really do think Daisy needs to take you in hand.
Unfortunately despite all my efforts Clyde remains an oaf, a larrikin and a hopeless case, I wish Daisy luck in sorting you out.

Pay no notice. Oaf and larrikin don't begin to describe the gormless insult to greyhound legacy that I must share my days with. Sigh. Any chance of moving to SA?
Licks and wags,
Daisy

You'd be welcome anytime, right now we have the biggest' dopyest foster hound ever, he makes Clyde look clever and everyone loves him! A sensible companion would be such a treat.

Does he try to eat his water?
Does he weigh over 40 Kilos?
If so we're fostering him and he's going to be on television because some idiot wants to do a program on him going to live in a nursing home.
He's changed colour too but having to live with Clyde could do that to anyone!

Last night we were talking about securing the duck pen from foxes. I said, "It will be good when we get the greyhound. He can alert me to any trouble"
"Ah, Hun, They dont bark"
"What do you mean they dont bark! I need them to alert me to trouble outside!"
"Well, they just dont"
This conversation went on for quite a while, him defending greyhounds and me taking a 'what are they good for?' stance. Eventually I tried for the most compromise possible -
"Well, can they get up off the couch and look out the door with a possible 'whoof'? If somethings happening outside?"
He answered, "Oh, yeah, definitely! You'd probably get that. If they arent too tired. Or asleep"
At least we agree they will fix our rabbit problem.

What a delightful comment! I might be pinching the thunder of Jennie (this post's writer) by responding first, but your comment gave me a huge smile.
And for rabbits, nothing could be better, except perhaps a whippet.
Please, please let us all know when you get your grey. We will want pictures!
Smiles,
Chris
