Large dogs suitable for small places

July 27th 2009 00:56
greyhound at rest

Greyhounds make great pets for some surprising reasons. They have a justifiable reputation for gentleness and calm natures, but did you know they are an ideal dog to have in a flat?

This seems odd because greyhounds are big. Technically, they are a medium-sized dog, but they are at the large end of medium, and as such not logical candidates for small homes. However, they are excellent pets for people in flats and high-density living for the many reasons.

Firstly, they are low energy. This surprises many people who assume that their speed and their slim, energetic-looking frames add up to dogs which need a lot of exercise. But this is not the case. Greyhounds are built for short bursts of energy, after which they love nothing better than a 10-hour sleep. All greyhounds will sleep 20 hours a day, and more if you let them. Like all dogs, they will enjoy a walk every day, but in fact a walk three times a week is sufficient exercise for them.

Secondly, they are quiet and docile. A small, playful dog can be a considerably more obvious presence in a flat than a large, lazy one. Your greyhound will appear by your side every now and then, just checking you're okay or asking for an ear scratch, but then it's back to the sofa or pillow for another few hours of sleep. Your neighbour will never know you have a dog.

Thirdly, they drop little hair and do not smell. They are in fact a generally healthy dog. They do not, for example, suffer the dysplasia problems which plague many breeds.

Finally, greyhounds are a breed which grows old gracefully. They live for an average 12 to 14 years, and older greyhounds develop a nobility and serenity which is a joy to be around.

This is a great advertisement for the breed.
The photo. The tone. The ads.

I think I might be part greyhound. That and koala.

Hi Norm,

Do you get the koala from your pterodactyl or your dragon side?

I'll sleep on it.

My grand-dad was Puff the Magic Pterodactyl.
It's a misnomer. Dragons aren't even bears.

I see you're part crow, and part demon. Scott Thompson.

Hey, my pharaoh hounds say they can out sleep your greyhounds any day.

Kharis is stretched out on the sofa, and I think he's been there all day. He was certainly there when I went out for lunch, and he's there again now I'm home.

Hi Carolyn,

Maybe it's all sight hounds

I know Scratchy won't stir all day until 30 seconds before dinner time. Then his head pops up and he sorts of drifts off the sofa and floats the hall and pokes his head around the study door and says, "Oi, Dear Provider, it's dinner bloody time."

Or words to that effect.

They sound lovely. My bloodhound seems to like a good long sleep but she wants two good long walks everyday and at least one good game of fetch each day...not a low energy girl at all.

Hi Cathy,

Two walks a day is a considerably commitment. Must cost you a bit in shoes

The irony for me is that I go running most days, but as I run for anything between 40 and 90 minutes, I can't take the greyhounds with me. Definitely sprinters and not stayers.

Here are a couple interesting stories about some shenanigans in West
Virginia that are not getting a whole lot of coverage because one of the
major actors, Ray Tomblin, also happens to be the Lt. Governor. Not that
he would use his influence to...well...you know, what with greyhound
racing being such a well regulated and managed "sport" and all. Just saying;

And here's a somewhat less...er...professional look at the situation:
