A great grey dane

September 8th 2009 01:44
great dane puppy
A younger version of Ruby

The known universe produces some remarkably energetic phenomena — the collision of star clusters, the imagination of political spin doctors — but no single entity anywhere has more energy than a 10-month old great dane.

We met one yesterday, the first time in perhaps a year that we have seen in our small local park a dog bigger than Scratchy.

Her name is Ruby and, while she is according to her human going to be a bit smaller than an average female great dane, she's already bigger than our larger-than average male greyhound.

Ruby is well above average, on the other hand, in huggability. If you can get her to stand still for more than two seconds, she is the biggest, softest, most huggable hunk of a dog this side of a St Bernard.

Ruby has also — and I am now being very serious — the most beautiful coat I have seen on a dog.

I am talking about colour and pattern. How to describe it? Dove grey brindled with a darker grey-verging-black. I took one look and said, "You could wear her to the opening night of the ballet."

It sounded impolite and impolitic as soon as I said it, but then I noticed the women in the group nodding.

"Absolutely," said one.

It was still rude, however. Ruby, I apologise.

For the ignorant people types out there it's called "Blue Marle." A friend of mine has one about six months old. He, Hamlet, of all names, is also a Blue Marle, has blue eyes and if I was just five years younger I'd wait for him to grow up, although I'm not sure why.

Maybe Ruby could be adopted as an honorary Greyhound if everyone agreed. Not sure I do, pretty though.

Hi Roux,

Thanks for that. Someone had to tell the Big Boss about "blue marle". He's muttering to himself right now, "blue what? Never heard of it!"

Ignorant, just ignorant

Ruby is the cutest Great Dane I have ever seen, and I've seen quite a few Great Danes in my twenty-two years of showing dogs.

You know what, Chris! I used to have a brown Great Dane when I was three-year-old. I knew that Great Dane is one of the most gentle animal amongst the dog breeds!

You're lucky to have Ruby as your pal, Chris! Remember to cherish her...

Hi Carolyn,

I'll tell Ruby that next time I see her.

Hi Wilson and Katy,

I'll cherish her okay Wilson. As Katy says, how could anyone not do so?

That is such a beautiful dog! I'm sorry I don't have anything more intelligent to say, I just love that picture.

Hi Sim,

Absolutely no need to apologise. The word "beautiful" says it all.

Hello Chris, Daisy and Scratchy,

I'll tell you a really nice story about a blue marle Great Dane. His name is Odin and he used to live with his Auntie Georgia who was a harlequin Great Dane. Last Christmas Georgia got old and died, Odin missed her so much he made himself ill and he stopped eating. His people, who are friends of our Boss and Missus came and asked us if we thought a Greyhound would come and try to be Odin's friend because they thought he might die too if they couldn't find him a friend soon. We were fostering Noddy then, Noddy is a big energetic brindle boy, he went to meet Odin and was stunned to meet a boy that dwarfed him. The Missus was stunned at how miserable and thin poor Odin had become.

The boys were a bit wary of each other at first but Odin was at least interested in Noddy so Noddy stayed and the Missus worried. It took about a week for Odin to accept Noddy but he started eating again within 2 or 3 days, we went to visit them after a fortnight to see how they were getting on and the Missus nearly cried with joy. Odin was happy and beginning to fill out again, and Noddy and Odin played a game of fetch together then flopped down on Odin's bed together.

Noddy had to come and stay with us for a night or two just recently when a fence blew down in a storm. His people came to fetch him even before they'd finished repairing it because they said Odin was being unbearable without him there. It's funny though, seeing a Greyhound as the little dog of the pair of friends.

Heidi.

Heidi,

That's a beautiful story. I'm so glad that Noddy found a forever home and with a great dog like Odin. It is a perfect situation for both of them. Good on your Boss and Missus for trying it and good on Noddy for being patient with Odin while he was still mourning.

I hope I get a new friend soon, I'm kinda lonely sometimes.

Roux you beat me to it... It's blue merle. Nothing new, rare, or special. It's actually pretty common.

I'll give you two out of three. It might not be new or rare, but it most certainly is special.

Great pics. Great dog! These merle great danes are certainly a special corner of the canine world.

Thanks for your comment,

Mine is more than special, He seems more human than dog. When I take him for a walk in the park and I sit on a park bench he will cudle up to me as he sits next to me on the bench. He will also sit and watch tv with me at home. He is an awesome dog.

If you don't have a dog, get a Great Dane and the bigger the better because they become like a big teddy bear and they aim to please.
