Daisy's diary: the big kid's skid

June 7th 2009 01:18
greyhound dog pet
He might be clumsy, but he's comfortable to have around.

It was an eventful visit to the park this morning. The Big Brindle was chasing me in his usual ineffective way — that lumbering clodhopper might have impressive straight-line speed but he can't cope with what I call my "watch-this-empty-space jink" — when he went down, nose-first, into the dirt.

Talk about a high-speed crash.

His head went back under him and his body almost went right over the top. But it stopped before it flopped, so to speak, leaving his bottom pointing at the sun and his neck twisted in a rather ugly way.

The Big Boss was big-time alarmed because he came running up at a speed which would almost register on the greyhound scale.

By the time he arrived however, the Big Brindle had untangled himself and managed to stand up. He had dirt all over his face and in his ears, and a look which said, with all the grasp of reality for which the big fella is renowned, "What just happened?"

It was all I could do not to throw myself on my back and kick my legs and roar with laughter.

I don't mean to be mean, of course. He's good to lean on and he doesn't snore much. But he's really a soppy lad and it wasn't hard putting him at the end of the pack pecking order. I can't get over the dopey look on his face as he got up after his crash this morning. I don't really understand why Big Boss and Little Boss love him so much.

Daisy,

I felt the same about our big goof, the white speckled guy, but now he's gone I understand, mom found him very entertaining and he was a very good back warmer. I suspect your bosses feel the same about your goofy guy, he's entertaining, not bright, but funny.

Hey Roux, that was kindred spirit stuff. That's a level of understanding I don't see much around here, where I often think I'm under-appreciated. Do you think we've met in a previous life?

Yup, more than likely.

Do you think you've ever been one of those scratchy furry things with sharp claws? Mom calls 'em cats, I call 'em pests, but she had two when I came to live with her and one seemed a little like I knew her.

She says I act like one sometimes, I don't see it, but you know the big ones.

If we were those things do you think we were bad to be made into them?

I'm with you, Roux. Pests. Mind you, all my favourite dreams involve cats - and me being off the lead.

Oh, Oh, Oh, I forgot, Rabbits, I dream about them and being off leash a whole lot. Once I actually caught one but mom didn't seem to like it. I never figured that one out.

Yeah, rabbits. I forgot them too. And birds! I have dreams where I am off the lead and birds are ON the lead ...

Dear Daisy and Roux,

Why is it that we elegant, intelligent, sophisticated ladies always seem to end up paired with a dopey, clumsy, oversized devoted male. Not only that but they always seem to get all the attention, I mean who was it got invited to write a letter to the GAP newsletter? Me with my grasp of the finer points of the language and of the etiquette of being a pet dog? No, it has to be dopey old Clyde who can't even string two words of proper English together!

A word of warning about those cats though. I did manage to catch one once in our yard, it was night and the Missus let us out for our bedtime toilet stop. I saw this furry thing run through the orchard so I of course gave chase. Now if Clyde had had his wits about him we'd have caught it nicely. Give him his due, he can run faster than me, but he likes cats! Can you believe it? Anyway I caught the creature in the garage but it played a dirty trick on me and flipped onto its back so all the pointy bits were up. When we caught up to the lure at training it didn't do that! The Missus says the score was Feral Cat 10: Heidi 0. I was a big mess but I'd not got even one bite in! The Missus spent the next two hours washing all my cuts with disinfectant. She didn't seem to be very pleased with me. The big dope tried to lick the sore spots but there were too many of them for him to be of much use.

Heidi.

Hi Heidi,

You actually caught a cat? You actually caught a cat! Whimper, dream, wag, drool.

I agree about the dopey, clumsy, oversized males bit. About all they are good for is a bit of entertainment.

Licks,
Daisy

Yo Clyde,

How they hanging cobber? Oh, I keep forgetting, I don't have any to hang anymore.

Some fun around here recently mate. The girls - Daisy and Little Boss - have their knickers twisted over a fall I had in the park yesterday. Even the Big Boss is looking at my skinned knee like he's a bit worried. But it'll be fine with a couple thousand licks.

It was a great tumble though. I can't wait to try it again.

Dear Daisy,

Look to be honest (the Missus says I have to say this) to be technically honest, the cat caught me. There I've admitted it. I did chase it into a corner, I would have caught it, truly I would, if it hadn't been for all those pointy bits, nobody told me cats are related to echidnas, nobody said about the pointy bits, they were everywhere and so was this weird eerie noise it made and then the cat was nowhere. Clyde says it went up the garage trellis and into the night, he brave soul watched from a safe distance whilst I was being torn to pieces.

I can't say as I noticed your knickers in much of a twist over Scratchy's fall but you can't help loving the big dopes can you? They need so much looking after. I presume he's only showing off telling Clyde he's planning to do it again? Luckily for me Clyde is so arthritic he couldn't even start to emulate your big brindle, otherwise he'd give it a try I'm sure.

I have to confess I did shudder a bit when the Missus read out your diary. The foster girl we had before Clyde did a similar trick but she hit a concrete wall as she went over and had to be put down. It was very upsetting so do persuade the big fool not to do it again.

Heidi.

Hi Heidi,

Shudder. Scratchy had a sister named Itchy (yup, named after the Simspons characters) who died after running at full pace into a pole. Shudder, shudder. I'll have a yap to the BB.

Licks,
Daisy

Daisy & Heidi,

I was telling mom's mom about my pen pals yesterday, that they were in a foriegn country and all, she was pretty proud of me.

My big white and spotted dope taught me how to chase cats, until then I wasn't allowed, but he showed me how to do it outside when they came in the yard. I cornered one once, but mom's big friend came and stopped me before I caught it. Darn, why are the big one's so fussy about that?

I'm kinda missing the big white goof though. I don't know if mom will bring another one home, and i'm not sure I want one, but I do get to go more places with mom now, I think she feels I'm lonely at home without the goof. Course I mostly sleep, then when she comes home I act all hyper and drool and stuff.

I hope Scratchy really is OK after his tumble, it could hurt his neck, I'm glad it didn't but I sure wish i could've seen it, bet it was worth a bunch of pictures.

And Heidi, I'm so glad you caught a cat, well almost, but I can't believe no one told you about the sharp pointy things, I knew about 'em because mom had two of those things when I came here to live, but mom took first one and then the othe away and they never came back. She told me they went to the bridge, but I don't know how that was possible, there aren't any bridges around here, and why would they do that anyway?
