The bird who laughs at dogs
March 22nd 2009 08:19
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.
See that, on the ground, beside the dog bowl?
Oh dear.
We have a bird which visits us regularly — every evening at dog dinner time, in fact — and it's a bit of a character.
The bird is a dove. I'm no bird expert, but I don't associate doves with the characteristics this one displays, such as bravery, a love of adventure and a sense of humour.
How else do you describe a bird which likes to land within feet of an eating dog and strut around, picking up stray bits of kibble? When the dogs dart at it — and greyhounds, remember, dart at close to light speed — the dove jumps neatly out of reach, flaps its wings a couple of times for stability, laughs heartily at the foolish, lolling-tongued face below, and lands again as soon as foolish face returns to the dog bowl.
At the end of dinner time, with the dogs settling back on their sofas for a nice digestive nap, the bird can regularly be seen perched on the side of the bowl, methodically picking out any leftovers.
I can tell you it is of the grab and swallow school of eating, like Scratchy, rather the Daisy's more dainty style. I can also tell you that tonight I saw no bird. Just a feather. One wretched, sad feather.
Oh dear.

It took 23 pictures before I got him with teeth showing a lip curled. I was using patience, let me tell ya!

Good things humans don't reflect dog behaviour. Mind you, I can only bark for myself. Wag.
