Scratchy's diary: My February 14 treat

The Big Boss was particularly affectionate to the Little Boss this morning, as if February 14 is some special day. He called her "Valentine". That's a new one — how many names can one person have?
Anyway, he finally stopped with the affection and asked Little Boss if she would like some breakfast in bed.
"I would," she said.
"I would too," I said, but I don't think he heard me.
However, as the old saying goes, it's the persistent dog which catches the leatherwood honey on soy and linseed light rye (although I'd accept margarine on cheap white), and so I followed Big Boss to the food room.
"Can I have a piece of toast?" I asked, with just that right mix of politeness and respect which I have found, from long experience, lets hoomans think they are pack leaders.
"You've already had breakfast," he said.
Drats. I was hoping he'd forgotten.
"Oh, I know that," I said, with a self-deprecating smile, "but just this once, couldn't you show how much you love me with a little extra something?"
And, amazingly, he gave me an extra bit of toast.
Maybe there is something special about February 14.

Yer'd have er bash ut anythin' uf it had food ut ther end uv ut would'n yer? I reckons yer'd get on real goodoh with Gus our foster dog. Heidi an me, we've never seen a Grey eat like him. We stands an watches him cos we can't believe ut, gobble gulp an about er quarter uv ut's gone, gloop gulp an ther next lot's dahn, schloop gulp an ther rest uv ut's gone! Fer a garbla days he put us off our stride so bad we dun eat our stuff, then Heidi ses "He reminds me of someone but I can't think who" an I ses "I reckons it might be Scratchy frum whut ther Missus reads out ter us". Heidi ses I'm right an she has great sympathy for Daisy havin ter live with a pig like thut alla time.
How dus yer do ut mate? I reckons I'd just abaht be ready ter clag ther bag uf I tried ter eat like thut. Yer stumic must be built like er brick shithouse ter cope with ut, an how dus yer know whut yer eatin? Whut if they goes an slips er pill in yer stuff?
Heidi eats slow an steady, I checks every bit before I picks ut up, yer orta try ut sometime. thut way yer gets ter taste ther stuff an yer can really give the Missus ther stirks by refusin ter eat stuff thuts meant ter be good fer yer health.

Thanks for your concern and advice. I've tried slowing down, I really have. But I guess I just have the Gulp Instinct. Gloop gulp, schloop gulp - these things come naturally to me.
Gus sounds like my kind of grey.
